Development

On January 2, 2011, Aditya Chopra confirmed that the third installment of the Dhoom series would begin principal photography by the end of 2011. Initially, the producers and Aamir Khan wanted to release the film on Christmas of 2012,[1] but the plan was scrapped in favor of an early release date in 2013, mainly due to a forecast that a Christmas release would force a rushed post-production schedule, which was unfavorable given the high degree of technicality.[2]

Casting

Aamir Khan was signed on to essay the lead role and the antagonist, while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra will reprise their roles as police officers. Katrina Kaif was signed on as the lead heroine, starring opposite Khan.[1] Dhoom 3 will be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, replacing Sanjay Gadhvi who directed the two previous films and declined to return to direct the third.[1] Both the lead actors took up special preparations for the roles that they are playing. Khan reportedly learnt ballet [3] and French technique of parkour,[4]a method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency while Kaif took paragliding training and singing lessons.[5] Bachchan reportedly lost nine kilos of weight to prepare for his role in the film.[6]

Filming

Filming for the film was expected to kick-start from January 2012, with Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra facing the camera first[7], but due to the release of lead actor Aamir's film Talaash, has been pushed forward to March.[8]

3D Format

Reportedly, the producer of the film, Aditya Chopra wanted to make the film in 3d format, feeling that the success of Haunted 3D showed that Indian audiences have opened up to 3D cinema viewing . But actor, Aamir Khan is not convinced as he thinks 'making a 3D film needs more expertise'.[9] Some sources still maintain that the film will release in 3D.[10]

Soundtrack

It was announced that the composer of Dhoom and Dhoom 2, Pritam, will return once again to compose the music of the third installment.[11]
